In today’s digital age, establishing a strong online presence is crucial for businesses of all sizes, especially with the most commonly used search engine. However, for small businesses, it can be particularly challenging to stand out amidst the competition. One of the most effective tools to enhance online visibility and attract local customers is Google Business Profile (GBP). This free tool from Google offers a multitude of benefits that can significantly boost a small business’s growth and success.

In this article, we will discuss many reasons why you need a Google Business Profile and how those reasons can benefit your business. Before we can understand the benefits, Let’s review what GBP is.

What is a Google Business Profile?

As clear as it sounds, is as clear as it gets. A Google Business Profile is created to give the searcher a hub of information to match the business/services they are likely inquiring about. Information like:

  • Your business name and location,
  • Ours of Operation and
  • The areas your business serves.

The GBP also includes helpful direct buttons to your website, map directions to our location (if applicable), bookmark the business page in Google, shareability, and direct calling. All things you would need to do when inquiring about a business, while removing barriers of use, like manually entering phone number to order a pizza.

Google Business Profile Buttons

Looking at the image to the right, before we even open the GBP, we have two buttons, average review rating, review snippet with relevant keywords, and a contact number.

The images show a search for local bowling alleys. If Striker’s Bowl was the option, you were looking for, you can click on the website button and take you right to their site.

Directions – A great query, paired with a great SEO plan, will result in what we see in the image. if a searcher is looking for a bowling alley, they are likely to want directions, or a website.

Phone – While this is not as pronounced as the two buttons that stick out, the phone number has a similar response when clicked. On a mobile device, this will prompt a call verification prior to actually calling.

Let’s set the scene – It’s a Friday night, and you and a few friends are discussing plans. Someone suggests bowling, but you are not sure if the local bowling alley is still open. Thankfully, simple requests like this can be quickly confirmed via Google.

1. Improve Local SEO

Google My Business plays a vital role in local search engine optimization (SEO). By creating and optimizing a GMB profile, your business is more likely to appear in local search results, Google Maps, and the local pack. This means that when potential customers search for products or services that you offer within their area, your business will be visible to them. Local pack results are more likely to be triggered when including specific terms in your search, like “near me,” or your towns’ name.

For example, “barbers near Grand Rapids, MI” shows local intent so Google does not provide you results in another state that would not be relevant to your search. Keep in mind, you must have location services turned on your device to get the best results using “near me”, or you can also provide a zip code or a simple town name.

Enhanced local SEO not only increases your online visibility but also drives more traffic to your website and physical store.

2. Enhance Customer Engagement

GMB provides various features that help small businesses engage with their customers more effectively. Through your GMB profile, customers can leave reviews, ask questions, and even message you directly. Responding to reviews and queries in a timely and professional manner can build trust and foster a positive relationship with your audience. Additionally, positive reviews can enhance your business’s reputation and attract more customers.

Often your Google reviews and questions can even ping keywords in a user’s search to help find services you may or may not offer. That is another reason to make sure you have accurate information included in your GMB profile.

3. Valuable Insight & Analysis

Understanding your audience is key to any successful business strategy. Google My Business offers valuable insights and analytics that help you understand how customers are interacting with your profile. You can track metrics such as the number of views, clicks, and calls your business receives. This data can provide critical insights into customer behavior and preferences, allowing you to tailor your marketing strategies to better meet their needs.

4. Cost Effective Marketing

For small businesses with limited marketing budgets, Google My Business is an invaluable tool. Creating and maintaining a GMB profile is completely free, yet it offers substantial benefits in terms of visibility and customer engagement. By leveraging the various features of GMB, you can effectively market your business without incurring significant costs. This makes it an ideal solution for small businesses looking to maximize their marketing efforts on a budget.

5. Easy Updates and Notices

Keeping your customers informed about your business is essential. With GMB, you can easily update your business information, such as address, phone number, and hours of operation, ensuring that customers always have the most accurate information. Additionally, you can post updates and announcements, such as special offers, events, or new products, directly on your GMB profile. This helps keep your audience engaged and informed about your latest offerings.

6. Increase Credibility and Trust

Having a verified Google My Business profile adds credibility to your business. Customers are more likely to trust a business that appears in local search results with complete and accurate information. Moreover, a well-maintained GMB profile with positive reviews and regular updates signals to potential customers that your business is active, reliable, and customer-focused.

In Conclusion

In summary, creating a Google My Business profile offers numerous benefits that can significantly enhance the online presence and success of a small business. From improved local SEO and customer engagement to valuable insights and cost-effective marketing, GMB is a powerful tool that can help small businesses thrive in the competitive digital landscape. If you haven’t already created a GMB profile for your business, now is the time to take advantage of this valuable resource and unlock its full potential.
